Bhutan
Bhutan’s Most Dangerous Glacier
In August 2022, Jamyang biked 9 hours each day for 7 days straight to get to Thorthormi glacier in Lunana, north Bhutan. In 2008, the water level of the glacial lake had to be reduced by 5 meters to avoid glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), a phenomenon common in the Himalayas posing grave danger to lives and livelihood. The nearest villages are a mere 2 kilometers from the lake.
The melt water was collected inside a discarded plastic bottle that was found along the way. The bottle stands for plastic pollution and the water represents the disappearing glaciers. The bottle is symbolic for “Climate Action”.
Riding Across Bhutan
In October the same year, Jamyang biked across the kingdom thorugh 15 districts, carrying the bottle with glacial melt water, stopping in schools and colleges along the way to create awareness on the climate crisis and inspire action. A film crew followed him in an electric support vehicle and filmed the journey into a documentary series. The series is currently playing on Shangreela, a local streaming platform and will soon be out on YouTube.
