World’s Highest Glacier

Ice that took 2000 years to form on the world’s highest glacier, the South Col glacier on Mt Everest has disappeared in the last 25 years due to climate change. In May 2023, Jamyang biked across Nepal towards Kathmandu and continued biking to the base of Mt. Everest to collect ice from the South Col glacier that was brought down by Lhakpa Nuru, a Sherpa who has summitted Everest 22 times. His father joined him on the expedition, keeping alive a tradition they started 3 decades ago.

Ice at COP28, Dubai

In November the same year, Jamyang biked solo and unsupported across the Himalayas to Dubai for the COP28. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury that cut short the biking trip. In order to limit his carbon footprint and to promote public transport, he took the train and bus to get to Karachi, from where he took a short flight to his final destination.

Along the way in India, Jamyang was able to collect a bottle of Himalayan glacier ice from Ladakh. The arrangement was facilitated by the team of the well known educationist and environmentalist, Sonam Wangchuk.

In Pakistan, Jamyang passed through the Sindh province that was hugely impacted by the 2022 flood. He visited villages where he found out that people were still living in tents, a year on from the floods. At the COP28, he shared his observations, while demanding urgent climate action. The campaign’s goal was to give voice and garner attention to the plight of the Himalayan communities to bring much needed support to the region.
